Closing Reflections on The Space We Exist In

January 22, 2025 by Clara Nartey 4 Comments

It’s hard to believe, but The Space We Exist In has come to an end. Over the past two months, this group exhibition at Heather Gaudio Fine Art, curated by the brilliant Larry Ossei-Mensah, brought powerful conversations to life. I feel honored to have been part of such a meaningful show that explored identity, belonging, and community.

Throughout its run, guests traveled from near and far to experience the exhibition. Seeing their engagement with the art was incredibly rewarding. Visitors shared thoughtful interpretations and asked questions that deepened the conversation. Additionally, Larry Ossei-Mensah’s sharp curatorial eye brought every piece together, creating what he called “visual poetry”, which left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.

I’m thrilled with how my work was received. The curator’s essay beautifully captured the essence of my practice:

*”Clara Nartey’s textile-based art provides a different, yet equally compelling, exploration of space. Her use of fiber as a primary medium blurs the lines between traditional craft and contemporary art, creating tactile narratives that engage with belonging, community, and heritage themes. For Nartey, space is not just something we move through; it is something we construct, stitch by stitch, through our relationships with others.

Nartey’s work transforms the traditionally female sewing and weaving craft into a powerful storytelling medium. Her pieces invite viewers to consider how personal and cultural histories are woven into the fabric of our lives, both literally and metaphorically. By engaging with textiles, Nartey creates a bridge between past and present, tradition and innovation, offering a meditation on how space—like fabric—can be both malleable and resilient. Her work underscores the idea that space is physical and relational, shaped by the connections we forge with one another.”*

Furthermore, the show brought exciting opportunities, including sales. Knowing my work has found new homes is a huge honor. Just as exciting, I loved connecting with the other participating artists—talented individuals whose creativity sparked countless ideas.

A huge thank you to Heather Gaudio Fine Art for their support and to Larry Ossei-Mensah for his vision and leadership. Lastly, to everyone who visited, engaged, or supported the exhibition, I deeply appreciate you.

As I move forward, I carry the energy and inspiration from this incredible experience with me. I feel inspired to keep creating and connecting. This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to share what comes next!
