New Directions in 3D Fiber Art In the Studio

From Experimentation to Emerging Structure

As you know, for the past few months, I’ve been diving deep into exploration mode—testing ideas, techniques, and materials in the studio. Recently, though, something shifted. Over the last two weeks, my experiments in 3D fiber art have taken on a more defined structure. I’m beginning to develop repeatable methods and, excitingly, I’ve completed a few sculptural objects that represent a major breakthrough in my process.

A Strong Conceptual Framework in 3D Fiber Art

What excites me most about this body of work is the strength of the concept that’s unfolding. With every object I create, I uncover deeper layers of meaning. The dimensionality isn’t just physical—it’s conceptual. Each piece in this 3D fiber art series is part of a growing narrative, one that reveals more of itself as I build.

“Art is an experiment, not a perfection. Each step leads you somewhere new.”

This quote speaks to the heart of my studio practice right now. I’m not creating for perfection—I’m creating to discover. The fascinating thing here is that I’m discovering that the new places the work takes me uncovers things about old ideas. Ultimately, I’m not deviating from the message that my work has always been about. It’s just different dimensions or angles, if you may, of the same topics. I’ll share more on this aspect later.

For now, I’m just going to say that art has a way of making you circle back in new and meaningful ways to topics you haven’t quite exhaustively expressed. It’s truly an expressive form and until you’ve fully expressed what is deep down inside you, you’ll keep going back to those topics. There’s so much digging deeper that happens when you keep pushing your practice. Even when you think you’re going “wider”, you discover that you’re going “deeper”. That’s what I’m experiencing.

A Glimpse at My Process: Weaving, Molding, Sculpting

My current technique for these 3D fiber art forms involves a fusion of weaving and sculpting. I start by creating flat woven sheets using threads of various thicknesses—everything from embroidery threads to chunky yarn. Once the sheet is ready, I mold it over a form to create a shape that lives somewhere between a pot and a basket.

These hybrid sculptural vessels carry echoes of both traditions while pushing toward something entirely new.
